14th week ( Last week of lecture )

Hi everyone ☺

So this is the last week of our first semester. We learned about the Microbial Metabolism and Nutritional Requirements of Microorganisms. And also for this week, we had the Three Minute Talk (3MT) for our SCL session. The title for the 3MT is ' Adopt a Microbe'. This project help us to gain more knowledge about other microbes as there are like tons of them. We managed to share information that we gathered among each other and we learned about so many new things that are very interesting.

So for the 3MT, I had choose a bioluminescence bacteria as it really catches my attraction about these bacteria. For me, they are very unique and intere4sting to explore about.

I focused on the bioluminescence bacteria that contain in the anglerfish esca. So basically, the anglerfish gets their food in interesting way with the help of bioluminescence bacteria which is also known as mutualistic symbiotic relationship. This ugly deep fish has a long manoeuvrable lure on their head that glows at the end, which is the esca. The bacteria gain nutrients and protection from the host while the host gain ability to attract prey. One of the uniqueness of these bacteria are they produce the light by communicate or talk with each other which also known as quorum sensing.

I have a thought on how to use bacteria to replace our electricity nowdays. And I was really amazed as i found a French company who already innovated them. These bacteria are used to light up the sign of street shops in France. Check the link below to know more about them ☺
